Neal represented a model to me of how far you could take it in the individual way. In the sense that you weren't going to have a work, you were going to be the work. Work in real time, which is a lot like a musician's work. I was oscillating at the time. I had originally been an art student and was wavering between one-man/one-work or being involved in something that was dynamic and and ongoing and didn't necessarily stay any one way. And also, something in which you weren't the only contributing factor. I decided to go with what was dynamic and with what more than one mind was involved with. The decision I came to was to be involved in a group thing, which was what I was involved in, namely the Grateful Dead, and I'm still involved in it...-Garcia.

The Grateful Dead and friends congregate on the steps of 710 Ashbury during the Summer of Love.	Families celebrate seasons, feasts, holidays, and weddings; they shower a pregnant sister with gifts, and sit with her through her labor; babies are shown around with pride at family visits.
We'll talk and screetch madly through the night in heated arguments about the Witch doctors of Africa, versus the the Hindus of India and the Voodoo Men of the West Indies. Pigpen of the Grateful Dead	The Grateful Dead in San Diego summer of 1968 when they played the Hippodrome Ballroom.

School graduates, performers, and artists can count on applauding family members in the audience. When a household moves, there are strong backs willing and a truck ready. If child care is needed on a moment's notice, there is always someone.

Absent family members are missed and talked about. Vigils are maintained in hospital hallways when a member is struck down, and when there is a death, everyone mourns. If a cousin is out of work, an uncle puts in a good word with a friend; if an award is given to one member, everyone feels pride. when tragedy strikes, everyone pitches in to bring things back to normal.

Every family has black sheep,
outcasts,
vendettas,
prodigal sons returning,
geniuses
