Bazaar del Mundo Announces 2008 Calendar of Events

Festive, Fashionable, Cultural Events Draw San Diegans to Old Town

SAN DIEGO (Feb. 26, 2008) – She’s doing it again! Diane Powers has announced her lineup of fashionable, cultural, entertaining and always colorful events for 2008 at her Bazaar del Mundo Shops, at the corner of Juan and Taylor Streets in Old Town, and restaurants Casa de Guadalajara (at the same location) and Casa de Pico now in La Mesa’s Grossmont Center.

A favorite Old Town tourist destination, the Bazaar del Mundo celebrates three years at its Taylor Street location behind Casa Guadalajara, and continues the popular shopping, dining and special event experiences that San Diegans have enjoyed for over 35 years.

The 2008 schedule of events:

May 2-4, Cinco de Mayo – Diane Powers launched Old Town San Diego’s first Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Bazaar del Mundo in 1983, and the popular celebration of Mexican culture has grown into one of today’s largest Cinco de Mayo fiestas in America.

Cinco revelers can enjoy authentic Mexican food, a "Margarita Garden" featuring the signature "Cincorita," mariachi music and folkloric dance performances at The Bazaar del Mundo Shops and Casa Guadalajara in Old Town, and Casa de Pico Restaurant in La Mesa.

June 27 and 28, Art in Fashion Marketplace – Art and fashion meet in the Bazaar del Mundo’s vibrant courtyard with a stunning showcase of one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry and accessories from the Bazaar’s top designers and artists from throughout Southern California and the Southwest. Local fashionistas will flock to this don’t-miss shopping destination.

August 1-3, Latin American Festival & Mata Ortiz Pottery Market – Diane Powers’ annual festival presents one of the nation’s most extensive collections of authentic Mexican folk art, traditional clothing and textiles, colorful collectibles and dazzling jewelry, plus entertainment and Mexican cuisine. Guest artisans from Chihuahua, Mexico will be in attendance, creating eye-popping Mata Ortiz pottery, a centuries-old art form renowned for its hand-painted geometric and ancestral symbols.

October 3-5, Santa Fe Market – The Bazaar del Mundo’s yearly Santa Fe Market brings the best of the Southwest to San Diego, featuring Southwestern-inspired art, jewelry and crafts, with artists traveling from as far as New Mexico and Arizona to demonstrate their wares.

October 31 – November 2, Dias de los Muertos – No need to cross the border to celebrate the annual Hispanic holiday – the Bazaar del Mundo honors Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with an exhibition of elaborately-decorated altars of sugar skulls and traditional handmade papier-mâché, wood and terra cotta decorations.

November, Toys for Tots Drive – ‘Tis the season for giving! San Diegans can spread some holiday cheer by participating in the Bazaar del Mundo’s annual Toys for Tots toy drive throughout November. A donation box will be displayed in the Bazaar’s courtyard where guests can drop off new, unwrapped toys for kids and teens – and then peruse the shops for some early Christmas shopping!
